Combating Diseases Like HIV/AIDS And Other STIs

Between November 2022 and March 2023, a nationwide Tanzania HIV Impact Survey (THIS 2022–2023) measured the current status of the epidemic and the country’s progress toward epidemic control. At a national level the survey found an adult (15+ years) HIV prevalence of 4.4%, which corresponds to roughly 1,548,000 adults living with HIV in Tanzania. Women carried a higher burden (about 5.6% prevalence) than men (3.0%). Annual HIV incidence among adults was estimated at 0.18% (about 60,000 new adult infections per year), with incidence higher among women than men. Viral load suppression (VLS) among all adults living with HIV was estimated at 78.0%. In terms of progress toward the UNAIDS targets, THIS reported that ≈82.7% of adults living with HIV knew their status, ≈97.9% of those aware were on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and ≈94.3% of those on ART had viral suppression, showing strong treatment coverage but room to improve earlier steps (testing and diagnosis.

In this project Local activities such as the Ruanda District outreach across Amanimakoro road is an essential complement to national efforts. Community-level interventions; including public education, on-site HIV testing with counseling, and inclusive sports and recreational event; we create safe spaces for people to ask questions, get tested, and be linked to care without shame. In many communities, sports draw crowds and create natural opportunities to reach young people and families with prevention messages, while testing tents and trained counselors make it easy to translate curiosity into action.

Objectives of the HIV/AIDS, STIs and Sexual Violence Training, Testing and Awareness.

The objectives are to increase community awareness, reduce stigma, and improve uptake of HIV testing and linkage to care among residents of Ruanda District (Amanimakoro road) through targeted health education, on-site testing, and community engagement activities alongside the construction road.

Provision of Awareness

As part of the HIV/AIDS awareness and testing campaign conducted along Amanimakoro Road in Ruanda District, CCDO and China Railway Seventh Group Constructors organized a special session was organized for construction workers operating in the area.  Dr. Joseph Washa, a medical expert provided a detailed education concerning HIV/AIDS, STIs and Sexual Violence. The training aimed to increase awareness, encourage behavioral change, and promote voluntary HIV testing among the workers. The session began with an overview of the current HIV situation in Tanzania, highlighting findings from the Tanzania HIV Impact Survey (THIS) 2022–2023. During the awareness session, facilitators provided education on HIV transmission, prevention, and treatment. Participants were reminded that HIV can be prevented through consistent use of condoms, avoiding multiple sexual partners, and refraining from sharing sharp objects such as razor blades and needles. It was also emphasized that HIV is not transmitted through everyday contact such as shaking hands, sharing meals, or working together. The session further addressed common myths and misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS, encouraging open dialogue and understanding. Participants were informed about the availability of free HIV testing and antiretroviral treatment (ART) in nearby health facilities and the importance of early testing and treatment for long-term health.

HIV testing program.

HIV Medical Test was conducted to community members and constructors. A number of 106 people were tested, whereas 66 were men and 40 we women. Testing was done in two days; the first day 49 people were tested in which 28 were male and 21 were women. Among them there was 1 person (male) who was positive while the rest were negative. On the second day 57 people were tested, whereas 38 were male and 19 were female. Among them 1 person (female) was positive while the rest were negative. This makes 2 positive people among the 106 bwho were tested and the ages of all who were tested range from 17-38 years.

Prevention of awareness on HIV/AIDS, STIs and Sexual Violence

As a part of prevention program, there was provision of education and distribution of condoms to different people and places along the project coverage area. Constructors and villagers of Mkeke village. A total of 40 boxes of condoms were provided with the instruction on how to use them. In addition, brochures with HIV/AIDS, STIs and Sexual Violence education and precautions were supplied to the community members in order to make them updated on what to follow so as to stay healthy.

Condom Demonstration and Distribution

Under HIV prevention and control service we did a combination of methods to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, condom use demonstration ad distribution. We have distributed 40 boxes of condom and 125 pieces of condom to the China Railway Seventh Group Constructors and community members near the construction site.

Sports and Games engagement program.

Sports unite different groups of people together regardless to their ideology. This makes it simple to reach to a large population and educate them. We created different sports programs including football games and pool-table game. Together with this sports program we managed to educate a large group at once and pass a message that spread to the community easily.
